We hope you’ll join us on Sunday, January 25, 2015, 3:00 pm at the Palace Theatre in Albany for this musical extravaganza.  Empire State Youth Orchestra, conducted by Helen Cha-Pyo will be joined on stage by select singers from four high schools in the region, Albany, Shaker, Guilderland, and Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk.  Woodrow Bynum, Baritone, Brendan Hoffman, Tenor, Sharla Nafziger, Soprano, and a small choir from Boys Choir at The Cathedral of All Saints will complete the complement of musicians on the stage.

Carmina art workCarmina Burana is always a spectacular piece to perform and to watch/listen to.  To the best of our knowledge, it has not been done locally before to this magnitude and with the numbers of talented young musicians.  Four high-school choral conductors are collaborating with ESYO to bring this popular music to the public at the Palace.  The singers and orchestra will only meet 3 times before the actual concert.  Once at the Palace, the stage will be filled with about 350 musicians and all of the orchestra’s instruments, including two pianos and a vast array of percussion instruments.

Although the general public may not know the name of the music, Carmina Burana, or that of O Fortuna, the powerful chorus featured at the beginning and end of the piece, many will recognize the music because it has been featured for years in the popular media.  It has been used in television commercials for products as diverse as Carlton Draught Beer, Hershey’s Spreads, Old Spice, and many others, and in many, many movies (Excalibur (1981), Glory (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), The Doors (1991), Natural Born Killers (1994), The General’s Daughter (1999), Detroit Rock City(1999), Jackass: The Movie (2002), Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), and even G-Force (2009).
