Invitation from KIATS – the impetus for the Tour
About three years ago, Conductor Helen Cha-Pyo met Dr. Jaehyun Kim at a conference in Atlanta, GA. During that meeting, Dr. Kim described the wondrous World EXPO that would take place in Yeosu, South Korea, in the summer of 2012. He asked if ESYO’s Youth Orchestra would like to perform at the Expo in a beautiful new concert hall that was being built for the exposition. Out of that meeting, the idea of a tour grew and blossomed in to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the musicians in ESYO’s Youth Orchestra. Listen (and watch) Dr. Kim and Conductor Cha-Pyo talk about the tour (parts 1 and 2).
About the Tour
The Youth Orchestra will travel to China and South Korea from June 29 through July 12, 2012. By the time the trip is over, the musicians will have performed six times in outstanding concert halls in Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul and Yeosu. They will also play for U.S. service people and their families on the Army Base in Seoul. This trip will present cultural, musical, and personal once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for all participants.
Of particular note will be the orchestra’s visit to and performance on Sorok Island where elderly Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients reside. These people had had no exposure to western music until members of the London Philharmonic performed for them in 2010 in what was called a “transformative experience” for both musicians and residents.
