Youth Jazz Opens 2016-17 Season

Left to Right: Matthew Fox on tenor saxophone, Joseph Giordano on trombone, and Alice DeRagon on baritone saxophone

On Friday, October 21, we were treated with a jazzy start to our 2016-17 season as the ESYO Youth Jazz Ensemble took the stage alongside The College of Saint Rose Jazz Ensemble under the direction of conductor Paul Evoskevich at the Massry Center for the Arts in Albany. The ensemble opened the evening with Bob Mintzer’s Swing Out featuring Matthew Fox on the tenor saxophone (his first of three instruments played during the set) and Chris Ozaal on trumpet. The audience was then treated to a beautiful rendition of Cole Porter’s So in Love featuring Joseph Giordano on trombone and pianist Matthew Nemeth. Gershwin was the next to inspire our young musicians as they shared a beautiful arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue featuring Alice DeRagon on the iconic baritone saxophone solo, Henry James Fernandez with a finger-flying solo on the tenor saxophone, Bryce Kelly on trumpet, Matthew Fox on clarinet, and Matthew Nemeth on piano. The ensemble closed their portion of the evening with Duke Ellington’s Rockin’ in Rhythm featuring Quinton Cain on drums, Matthew Nemeth on piano, James Paolano on bass, Henry James Fernandez on tenor saxophone, and Matthew Fox on soprano saxophone.

If you didn’t get a chance to catch these exceptional young jazz artists in action, you can catch them at their next concert on Sunday, Dec 11 at the Massry Center for the Arts at 3 p.m. Treat yourself to some great jazz and support this rising generation of musicians!
