Youth Orchestra and Concerto Competition Winner at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall

On November 5, the ESYO Youth Orchestra led by Conductor and Music Director Helen Cha-Pyo took the stage of the historic Troy Savings Bank Music hall for an unforgettable night of music that featured this year’s Lois Lyman Concerto Competition Winner, violinist Aram Kim.

The concert began with the excitement of Dvořák’s Carnival Overture. With the audience on the edge of its seats, high school freshman, Aram, then took the stage with her violin to perform Vieuxtemps’ hauntingly beautiful Concerto No. 5 backed by the hushed power of the full orchestra. Aram, who is ESYO’s youngest-ever concerto competition winner, was unshakable in her magnificent performance, bringing the audience to its collective feet.

The evening concluded with Mahler’s highly technical and emotional Symphony No. 1.

Born and raised in Albany, Aram, who was named after Russian composer and conductor Aram Khachaturian, started playing the violin at the age of six. Aram joined the ESYO Repertory Orchestra in the fifth grade and became a member of the ESYO Youth Orchestra the following year, making her one of the elite orchestra’s youngest members. In addition to playing with ESYO, Aram has attended the Philadelphia International Music Festival and the 4Strings Music Festival. She has won second place in the Junior Division of the Camerata Artists International Competition. She also received bronze in the International Virtuoso Competition. In the future, Aram hopes to major and pursue a career in music. Away from the world of classical music, she loves reading, writing stories, playing badminton, and ice skating.

The Lois Lyman Concerto Competition is named after music teacher and one of ESYO’s founding members, Lois Lyman. It began in 1985. The winner is selected through a rigorous application and audition process from amongst the orchestra’s membership each year, representing some of the area’s finest musicians. Applicants must perform a concerto from memory before judging panel. The chosen musician is given the opportunity to perform a solo in concert each season.
