ESYO Members Perform at NYS Inauguration Gala

Two string quartets alternated during the afternoon of music on New Year's Day

We were thrilled when we got the call from the Governor’s office – ESYO members were invited to play at the 2023 New York State Inauguration Ceremonies for Governor Kathy Hochul.

Two quartets performed for the ceremony on New Year’s Day. The string quartet was made up of Yu-Heng Wang, viola; Trey Coughlin, cello; and Romeo Vashishth and Caitlin Weinheimer, both on violin. The cello quartet was made up of Ian Gu, Abigail Norsworthy, Adeline Hubbell, and Ian Jin. Music selections included pieces from Dvorak, Mendelssohn and Haydn – all were ESYO members, rounded out by a few alumni.

“Getting a chance to play for the governor is not a thing that comes very often,” said cellist Ian Jin. “I was so excited and I felt very warm inside because I know I was playing for my state and for my country. Also, knowing that people enjoy the music I play and come over and start recording means the world to me. That is what music does, it brings people together.”

Coordinating the quartets was Dr. David Bebe, ESYO’s Curriculum & Enrichment Coordinator. “This was a tremendous opportunity for the students,” said Dr. Bebe. “We could not be prouder of them for rising to the occasion.”
