Fireworks Ensemble, Project Trio, and Carnegie Hall Concert Headline 38th Season
ESYO has announced our 2016-17 concert schedule of more than 30 public performances throughout the Capital Region. The season includes audience favorites such as Melodies of Christmas and the annual Playathon at Crossgates Mall as well as exciting musical collaborations with some of classical music’s boundary-breaking stars like Project Trio and the Fireworks Ensemble. The season also marks the second year for ESYO CHIME, which uses rigorous, daily afterschool music instruction to inspire and uplift children from underserved communities.
“We had an incredible audition season this year and have over 350 talented young musicians ages six to 18 playing with us this season,” said Music Director Helen Cha-Pyo. “And what a season it is going to be! We are particularly excited by several collaborations with musical groups that are transforming the way we think of classical music. It will be exciting to see this new era of professionals work with the next generation of musicians at ESYO. Together, we are shaping the future of music in this region and well beyond. I cannot wait to see the community come out to support us again this season!”
Highlights of ESYO’s 38th season include:
Nov. 1: ESYO’s annual Young People’s Concert followed by the Free Concert for Senior Citizens at Proctor’s in Schenectady. These concerts reach into the heart of the community to share the joys of music and teach young and old about classical music. The concerts are sponsored by CDPHP.
Nov 5: The Youth Orchestra presents a concert at the historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, featuring this season’s Lois Lyman Concerto Competition Winner and the magnificent Mahler’s First Symphony.
Dec. 10: We will team up with Barnes & Noble in Colonie Center to raise money to support the ESYO program, which is dedicated to ensuring no qualified musician is ever turned away from our program. Help us give children the gift of music by joining our musicians for a day of free performances while getting holiday shopping done. Every purchase made will generate a donation to ESYO from our friends at B&N!
Dec 15-18: ESYO’s Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorale will perform in CBS 6’s annual Melodies of Christmas concerts at Proctor’s to benefit the pediatric oncology program at Albany Medical Center.
Feb. 4: ESYO will hold our annual Playathon at Crossgates Mall. ESYO’s 11 ensembles will perform for free at the mall in an all-day musical marathon! The day will include auctions to win the conductor’s baton and lead the orchestra as well as a musical “petting zoo” sponsored by John Keal Music!
Feb 11: In an event produced by our partners at Proctor’s, the Youth Orchestra and area schools will get the chance to learn from and perform with the riveting Fireworks Ensemble. This small musical group is making big waves on the classical scene with music that is turning classical music on its head including rock-inspired Stravinsky. Together, they richly weave diverse threads of our musical heritage with great American folk, rock, jazz and classical music.
