About The Event

ESYO’s Youth Jazz and Repertory Jazz bands serve up swing, funk, Latin, and lush ballads in a set built to groove.

Youth Jazz fires up Gordon Goodwin’s Hit the Bricks, rolls into Les Hooper’s Engine N. 9, and shifts styles with Piazzolla’s Libertango (arr. Mossman). Hard-bop returns on Dexter Gordon’s Cheesecake (arr. Stitzel). The band changes the mood with Frank Mantooth’s reflective Remembrance, Strayhorn’s classic ballad Lush Life (arr. Tomaro), and Bonfá’s bossa Gentle Rain (arr. Berg). Pete McGuinness’s The Swagger brings modern swing, and Fillmore’s Lassus Trombone (arr. Wolpe) closes with vintage trombone smears and a grin.

Repertory Jazz spotlights Sweeney’s take on Santamaria’s Afro Blue (Afro-Cuban 6/8), Jeff Jarvis’s Steep and Deep (funk-driven lines), and Hancock’s Chameleon (arr. Sweeney), a cornerstone of jazz-funk.

Come hear young musicians lock the pocket, trade solos, and make these charts their own.
