ESYO's First String Day A Success

ESYO hosted masterclasses and workshops focusing on string instruments on January 14, 2023

For the first time in its history, ESYO hosted a “String Day”, open to any string player in the Capital Region, from beginner to advanced. Over 60 musicians attended, led by guest artists Sterling Elliott and Dr. Nune Melik, and luthier Thomas Dunn. Master Classes were given by the artists, and an instrument maintenance workshop was given by Luthier Thomas.

Advanced ESYO students performed solo repertoire for cellist Sterling and received tips on how to become not just better cellists, but better musicians. Already in his young career, Sterling has performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony, and many others.

Attendees also explored the many connections between poetry, writing, production and music with internationally acclaimed musician, poet, author, and educator Dr. Melik. They learned how to better “tell a story” through their music during this unique session. After her presentation, Dr. Melik also worked with advanced ESYO students, who performed solo violin repertoire and received feedback from this multifaceted artist.

Luthier Thomas focused on the care and maintenance of an instrument through the changing seasons, properly changing strings, adjusting a bridge, and other minor repairs – all this to help get the most out of one’s instrument and bow. The hands-on workshop was invaluable for string players.

Thank you to Dr. David Bebe, ESYO’s Curriculum and Enrichment Coordinator, for organizing this great day!
