Audition Requirements

Ready to play at the next level?

Auditions are required for all ESYO Performing Ensembles. Membership is open to youth musicians up to age 20.

ESYO offers both Classical and Jazz ensemble opportunities. We are pleased to offer both in-person recorded auditions as well as self-recorded video submission auditions. In-Person times are limited so sign up early.

Eligibility & Audition Policy

  • Auditions are open to qualified student musicians who meet ensemble proficiency requirements.
  • Only one classical and/or one jazz audition per instrument per season will be accepted.
  • Students may sign up for one Classical, one Percussion, and one Jazz audition per instrument each season.
  • All audition materials must be submitted by the published deadlines.
  • Students are expected to participate in school music program

Option 1: Live In-Person Recorded Audition

  • Limited time slots are available for In-Person Recorded Auditions at Brown School June 13 & 14th
  • Auditions will be conducted and recorded by trained proctors.
  • Adjudicators will not be present in the room.
    Each audition will be videotaped in a single take.
  • Recordings will be reviewed later by adjudicators to ensure a thorough and fair evaluation.
  • Deadline to sign up for an in-person audition: May 28

Option 2: Self-Recorded Video Audition

  • Students who prefer may submit a self-recorded audition.
  • Please register in advance for Self-Recording Video Auditions by May 28th.
  • Recordings must be completed in one continuous take without edits.
  • Students must confirm adherence to the single-take, no-edit requirement.
    This ensures alignment with the live audition experience.
  • Clearly introduce yourself (name, instrument, and ensemble) at the beginning of the recording.
  • Ensure clear audio and video quality.
  • Deadline to submit a self-recorded audition: June 11

Percussionists are not eligible to submit a self-recorded audition.

• All percussion auditions must be completed live at Brown School.

• Students unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts should contact Sue Lascoe at slascoe@esyo.org to arrange alternate

accommodations.

Audition
Components

Requirements vary by instrument and ensemble but may include:

  • A prepared solo selection
  • Required orchestral or ensemble excerpts
  • Scales

Please carefully review instrument-specific requirements below before preparing your audition.

SOLO SELECTION GUIDELINES

  • Choose repertoire that demonstrates tone quality, technical proficiency, musical expression, and stylistic understanding.
  • Jazz and Classical applicants should select standard classical literature.
  • Jazz applicants should demonstrate stylistic accuracy, rhythmic strength, and improvisation skills.

EVALUATION &
PLACEMENT

Auditions are evaluated based on:

  • Tone and sound production
  • Intonation
  • Rhythm and accuracy
  • Technical control
  • Embodied Musicianship
  • Overall readiness for ensemble participation

All auditions are reviewed by the adjudication panel.

Placement decisions are final and will be communicated via email after the audition process is complete.

  • Improvisation over the form is optional but encouraged
  • Use of play along track is permitted but not required

Improvisation (Optional): Improvise two choruses over a blues form, play along track.  Highly encouraged but not required.

Comping (required): Demonstrate 2 choruses of comping over a blues

Youth Jazz Orchestra Requirements

Oboe/English Horn Requirements

Audition must be prepared on oboe.

Repertory Jazz Orchestra Drum Set Audition Requirements

Solo (required): Prepare TWO  jazz standards of your choice in different styles that demonstrate proper articulation and phrasing (example: Up Tempo swing, slow blues, latin, ballad). 

  • Perform the “head” (melody) of each – Comp one chorus – “head” out

Improvisation (optional): Trade 4’s: medium swing style – play 4 bars of time/4 bars solo (repeat for about 45 seconds in length) 

Style Proficiency (required): Demonstrate 30 seconds of “time” in each style: Up Tempo Swing, Medium Swing, Bossa Nova, Ballad (brushes), Funk/Rock

Youth Jazz Orchestra Requirements

Keep in mind good technique and musicianship. 

Two drummers/aux percussionists may be selected who will rotate.

Excerpt: Play Melody on provided excerpt (Daahoud) using full drum set (be creative with pitch/timbre)

Comp for about 60 seconds the following styles (7 separate grooves in total): slow, medium and fast swing (1/4 = 112, 126, 224), Bossa Nova, Rock/Funk, Shuffle, Ballad with brushes (1/4 = 60) 

Improvise two choruses on Blues of your choice, med swing

Jazz Piano Requirements

Available Positions: Youth Jazz Orchestra
